«We are proud for what we have built»

The Presidents of Olympiacos BC, Panagiotis and Giorgos Angelopoulos said they are happy for the team and stressed that they will continue striving to win the top.

“Congratulations to Real. That’s basketball, that’s how sports are”, was what Giorgos Angelopoulos said in his opening statement. “I think that during the whole season, Olympiacos has played the best basketball in Europe. From there on, I think we were not lucky in the end. Nevertheless, we are proud for Olympiacos, for what we have built, for what we have created, for the health this team exudes. We told the players so in the locker rooms. We are very proud for all of that. Olympiacos has the 8th, 9th or 10th budget in Europe and was a breath away from winning the Euroleague. We lost for a split second, for one shot, just like it happened last year. Now, we move forward for our next goals this season”.

On his part, Panagiotis Angelpoulos said: “Congratulations to Real. We have had the best regular season, winning first place. But that’s how sports are. We have established ourselves within the European elite, with final four participation and games lost in nanoseconds and by one or two points. Last year it was the semi-final, this year it’s the final. We are proud for the team. We want to thank the 8.000 Olympiacos’ fans that came here from the opposite end of Europe to support this team. The team exudes health. We will continue trying to win the top”.

Asked whether Olympiacos is going to maintain the core of its roster for next season, he replied: “This is a question to be answered after we win the Greek Championship, not today”.

Finally, on whether the praises of the opponent during their time of celebration is a vindication to them, Panagiotis Angelopoulos pointed out: “Yes, it is… We also congratulated Real’s President and everyone on their team. That’s sports. The game was decided in details. We were ahead for 35 of the 40 minutes. But I consider the fact that 8.000 people traveled here to support us to be the greatest vindication of all”.
